Aging at Home

"Aging at Home" means living in your own home and community safely, independently and comfortably as you get older, instead of moving to an assisted living facility or nursing home. “Aging at Home” is about empowerment and choice, allowing older adults to remain in their familiar surroundings and maintain a good quality of life as they age.

What Is a Village?

Coastal Neighbors is one of a growing number of “villages” across our country.

All villages are dedicated to the concept of “Aging in Place,” meaning they offer older adults a number of options that help them to continue living at home, stay independent and connected to their community. Members can also stay active, even after driving and home maintenance become challenging — the point at which many people leave the community they love.

No two villages are alike; they evolve according to need and circumstances. All have volunteers who provide services that range from rides to the grocery store to help with chores at home. Some, like Coastal Neighbors, are based on a membership model with an executive director and a board of directors. An umbrella organization, Village to Village Network, helps communities establish and operate thriving villages all around the world.

The Village to Village Network website has more information on village models and why villages are needed.

In Massachusetts alone, 26 villages are affiliated with Village to Village Network; three of them are in development.
