DartmouthJoin the Friends of the Dartmouth Libraries on Thursday, August 15, at 6:30 p.m. to hear local author and intrepid traveler Matt Davis as he discusses how his love of travel first developed, shares some of his favorite stories and photos, and offers useful tips for anyone thinking about traveling abroad.  Colliding with a kangaroo in Australia, navigating Italy’s strict dining customs, trying to avoid choking on a popular Japanese confection or strolling the shores of Israel’s Sea of Galilee – these are just a few of the hilarious, suspenseful and introspective highlights described in his collection of travel memoirs, At Home in the World: Reflections of a Travel Addict.  Signed copies of the book will be available for purchase at the event.  The presentation will be held at Southworth Library.

Born and raised in New Bedford, Massachusetts, Matt Davis is a retired psychology professor who has spent much of his personal and professional life traveling the globe.  Matt graduated from UMass Dartmouth (Southeastern Massachusetts University) and earned graduate degrees from the College of William & Mary and the University of California Irvine.  He spent 30 years at Dominican University of California, teaching and conducting research on how at-risk populations respond to the dangers posed by natural hazards like earthquakes and volcanic eruptions.  Matt was able to combine his professional responsibilities with extensive travel by attending international conferences and leading study abroad trips for students.  A self-described “travel addict,” he has visited 35 countries and has driven across the USA on over 40 road trips.  In 2016, he created a travel-oriented website: Matt: At Home in the World (mattathomeintheworld.com) featuring his travel blogs, photos, and recommendations.

Dr. Davis’ presentation will be held at Southworth Library, 732 Dartmouth Street.  For more information, please e-mail [email protected].
